Heres what the social anxiety group did yesterday:

Eight of the group members played basketball at Buffalo Ridge Park in North Phoenix for a few hours.  It was quite busy there so it was a proactive experience for those who are self conscious about playing in public.  Some group members said that they were so focused on playing the game that they didn't even have time to think about their anxiety.  Any physical activity burns off any excess adrenaline, which we interpret as "anxiety."  It also increases the amount of endorphins in our bodies which helps to put us in a better mood.

For those of us with anxiety about sports, playing with the group is a good way to slowly work on getting better with that.  Even if someone has trouble just shooting a hoop, for example, you could have the group members face away from you as you try shooting.  The group members aren't going to judge you because they understand your anxiety feelings and would be right there to provide rational support.  After all, the group members want to see you make progress just as much as they want themselves to.
